Just Say “Thank You”

Today’s thought is a follow-up on criticism. Yesterday, I talked about negative criticism and how it is best to address it directly or ignore it completely.

Today, I want to talk about criticism that is intended to help us. Oftentimes, people are trying to help you by giving you constructive and useful criticism. There have been many times in my life when people have given me advice or tried to help me out, and I did not think their ideas were very useful. I would push their ideas away and not really take them into consideration.

However, I have learned that this is not the most useful response. When someone provides you with criticism that is intended to help you, the best thing you can do is simply say “thank you.”

Constructive criticism is a learning tool

While there were times that people’s criticism did not seem useful, there were so many other times when their ideas were invaluable. People’s ideas about the Academic Life Coaching website, edits on my written projects and books, and so many other things, have helped me improve.

It is essential to be open to criticism, and even seek out people’s honest feedback. Other people’s feedback and criticism is extremely valuable when it is coming from a helpful place.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me move forward and improve. Your criticism has made all the difference!
