Daily Insight Video

Today’s thought comes from an injury that I had last week on the mountain biking trail. I was riding and doing tailwhips on some jumps. I made it over three of the jumps, but didn’t quite make the fourth. I caught myself with my hands, got up, brushed it off, and made it through the rest of the trail. When I got home, my elbow was a little sore, but it seemed just fine when I left to go ride again on Thursday morning.

After my ride on Thursday, I woke up Friday morning and realized that I had sprained my elbow. I went to see a friend who is a physical therapist, and he recommended that I take a week off from riding. Right then it hit me, I hadn’t had a week off from mountain biking in a really long time. However, taking this rest was important, and it felt like I was getting some kind of software update for myself.

Maybe this thought jumped out at me because I have been dealing with so many technical issues lately, and I have had to update my phone and the computers around the house. However, the same concept for updating technology seems to apply to us as human beings!

give yourself a break

Wouldn’t it be nice if we were notified when we are pushing ourselves too hard and when we are in need of a little rest or update about where we are in our lives?

So I have taken this last week to update myself. I have allowed myself to recover and rest during this time, and it has been amazing. Before my injury I didn’t realize how necessary it really is to give yourself a break and take the time to relax a little bit. These little updates for ourselves are important, and we need ways of identifying the times that we need them before something really goes wrong.

My question to you is, what system do you use to know when you need to either push yourself harder or lay off and give yourself a break?
