Work your Way Backward

Daily Insight Video

Today’s thought comes from a training class I just lead. This group is amazing! There is someone from London, and another person from Mexico in the course. It is so incredible to see such a diverse group of people come together to explore the same ideas and topics.

This class meeting was all about systems and how you can think in terms of a system to help you be more productive or successful. A common theme that came up in our debrief was the idea of starting with the ideal.

The process is simple: when you identify the difficult thing you want to accomplish, start by imagining what the ideal version of your success would look like. Once you think of that ideal situation, work your way backwards through the small steps you need to take to get there. This will help you create the best structure, or system, to reach the thing you want to accomplish.

start with the ideal and build a system

The great thing about thinking in systems in that you are thinking in actions. You are thinking about the action steps you need to take rather than just the goal that you want to reach. When we only focus on our goal, we become overly concerned by only achieving something big. In the long run, this become exhausting and the enthusiasm you had at the beginning does not persist. Systems give you the power back and allow you to move forward, toward the things you want to achieve in the long run.

After you identify the steps you need to take and the resources you already have, everything else will seem to fall into place. Working backwards, from the ideal to the specific steps, allows you to move forward and accomplish the things you want.
