The Role of Mom
At church today all the childcare people – all of the dozen staff it takes to run the children’s program – were men. Usually, of the twelve people, only one is a man. It is Mother’s Day, and all the women had the day off.
I have two girls, and sometimes we play a game where we switch each character’s gender. Imagine such a rereading of King Arthur. Queen Arthuretta is one strong woman.
For me, I’m so fortunate that I had a mother who pushed and supported me academically and taught me that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.
And I’m even luckier to have a mom who taught me how to throw a baseball.
Even those seemingly little acts of gender-stereotype reversal are powerful.
Mom, thank you for being the strong Mama you are.
Happy Mother’s Day.
