2 Scientifically Proven Reasons Why People Quit
You’ve got to love science.
Of the two scientifically proven reasons why people quit, one is completely obvious, the other I found incredibly insightful and useful.
The first reason is obvious. People quit because they run out of self-discipline to keep going.
Self-discipline functions much like a muscle. After getting worked out (and avoiding that sugar!), it gets depleted. Yet working out your self-discipline on a daily basis gets you metaphorically ripped. You develop some massive self-discipline-toids.
The second reason I found insightful – and useful – and I didn’t see it coming. People quit because they don’t want to take a blow to their self-esteem or public perception.
We really, really don’t want to come to terms that we just simply aren’t good enough, and we sure as heck don’t want other people to find out we’re not good enough.
Consider how athletes feel when time runs out and they’ve lost.
The key is seems to keep persisting – and those who persist are many times more likely to achieve their eventual goal and thus develop more persistence – is to get over looking bad so you can keep going until you look really, really good.
And isn’t it all about looking good?
